In this chapter, the reason for expansion of the western settlement was for the search for gold led by Spaniard Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Later on, John Wesley Powell went on an expedition which is known as the Powell 1869 Expedition. While on his expedition, the explorers observed the lands as "fertile" and "forbidding" since there was not enough water in the west.
